女性崇拜能够在道教中得到全面的继承和有深度和广度的发展，
不是偶然的，
而是有多种因素在起作用。
这是由主"阴"的思想基础决定的。阴阳的对立与统一，
这是道教思想的基本方法。
道德经》第四十二章说"万物负 阴而抱阳"，
老子把阴放在前，阳放在后面，这反映了阴重于阳的思想。
在《道德经》中老子常把"道"这个最基本的范畴与母性的意思相联。
如二十五章说"（道）循环而不停，可以作为宇宙的母亲，
我不知道它的名字，就把它叫做道"。道在天地产生之前就已经存在，
它是永恒的，又是不断运行的。 道就是宇宙万物的母亲 。
女性之所以在道教中受到崇拜，
因为女性本身在道教组织建设中起到了很大的作用。
从魏朝和晋朝开始，有些女性成为道派的创始人，
或在道派的建设中以及经典的传授中成为重要任务。
如茅山。。。
上清派的第一代宗师魏华存就是其中的一位。
